Happy 2018 everyone! I am SO excited for all the events and weddings in my calendar this year and after a restful holiday season it is time to get back to planning and designing with all my amazing clients. To kick off the New Year, I’ve listed some predicted trends for the upcoming event season. From bold colors to bridal fashion and cutting edge décor, check out what you can expect to see this year.
Pantone’s Colour of the Year
Would this really be a proper entry without commenting on pantone’s colour of the year? This year, Pantone selected ultra violet as the shade to influence all things design and décor and they align the colour with originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking, (the world could use a little more of all of these things this year). Personally, I love the hue and when used carefully and thoughtfully, punches of bold colours really make a wedding or event stand out
In past years white on white or monochrome weddings have been very popular but I am starting to see growing trend towards the other end of the spectrum with black accents. These include linens, napkins, cutlery and charger plates or placemats to complement metallic and other bold colours used in weddings. It is a dramatic and sophisticated touch for any function.
Modern couples are more often opting out of the traditional 3-course set menu. Instead couples are choosing food they love and food that brings their guests together and encourages mingling. Think family style sharing plates to food trucks and portable pizza ovens, wedding food is definitely seeing a change. For 2018 more alternative options will become increasingly common such as Mexican and Japanese inspired cuisine with tacos, sushi and ceviche on the menu.
Transparent settings and décor are gaining popularity in a big way. Everything from the venues themselves, (think transparent custom tents, or bright, modern spaces with full windows) to acrylic hanging seating plans, semi-transparent day of stationary and tablescapes featuring an abundance of glass details. This is a great look for modern and minimalist couples.
More Brides prefer modest wedding looks with flowing gowns, long bell sleeves and wedding cover ups. Stylish capes are a huge trend for brides getting married in 2018. From floor length pieces to heavily embellished styles, these pieces will make a grand fashion statement.
Weddings (and wedding parties) are getting smaller. Couples now opt to leave off relatives they haven’t seen for years, choosing more intimate gatherings with the people that matter most and cutting the bridesmaids and groomsmen altogether. This also cuts the wedding budget considerably, meaning extra cash saved to afford everything on the wedding wish list.
Wreaths and Body Flowers
Not just for Christmas, wreaths are becoming a popular alternative decoration for weddings across all seasons. Wispy grasses, sweet smelling eucalyptus and wild flowers, these bohemian rings are perfect for hanging installations or for the wedding party. There is also a growing interest in floral jewelry including bracelets and loose, dramatic necklaces.
